Energy Storage Systems

What is Energy Storage Systems?

Energy Storage Systems are the set of methods and technologies used to store energy. The stored energy can be drawn upon at a later time to perform useful operation.

For instance, many renewable energy sources (such as wind, solar energy or solar energy, tides) are intermittent. Sometimes the use of renewable energy is not direct when the energy is available, but at other times. Then we need energy storage so that energy can be used when needed.

Energy is available in various forms including radiation, chemical, gravitational potential, electrical potential, electricity, elevated temperature, latent heat and kinetic.

There are various methods and technologies  to store various forms of energy. The choice of energy storage technology is typically dictated by application, economics, integration within the system, and the availability of resources.

Energy storage systems are also involved in converting energy from forms that are difficult to store to forms that are more convenient or economical.

Compressed Air Energy Storage

SwRI develops solutions for novel energy storage systems, including flywheels and compressed air storage. Our work includes a patented apparatus for use in compressed air energy storage.

Pumped Storage Hydropower

This technology entails pumping water from a lower elevation to a higher elevation when there is surplus renewable energy, then releasing water from higher elevations to generate electricity when demand increases. Thermal Energy Storage System

CSP systems convert solar energy into heat that generates steam to power electricity-generating turbines. SwRI’s chemical engineers have developed thermal energy storage applications using novel encapsulation formulation of molten salt capsules.
